Sometimes I ache to create beauty. I think that’s ultimately what motivates me to write. I can’t paint or make music.  So that ache forces words to spill over, powered by this deep yearning to give faithful expression to thoughts, experiences or feelings. It’s the “faithful” part that’s toughest. More often than not I’m disappointed with the final result. My words sound hollow, trite, insincere. But it’s fun–if frequently torturous–and cathartic to try.

I have a friend who creates beauty. He takes stunning photographs. But even when the reality of the images he’s capturing aren’t beautiful, his photographs are. I haven’t quite got that one figured out yet. I think it must have something to do with his heart. My friend has been through a lot in life. But he has a tender heart. Jesus taught that, “out of the overflow of the heart, the mouth speaks.” I think that maybe out of the overflow of the heart, the photographer snaps photographs too.

But do yourself a favour and take your time. This is art. You’ll feel your spirit nourished as you allow yourself to soak in each image. Indulge.
